Early 18thc English Carved Oak Joint Stool with Pegged Construction

About the Item

Not many pieces of this age have stood the test of time. This very early English joint stool is handcrafted of oak, note the rough burls on the top of the piece. It is of pegged construction and features block and turned legs. Primitive but beautifully hand carved on the apron and all four sides, this handsome piece also has four sturdy runners that are well worn with three hundred years of good use. Called a joint stool because it is a stool formed of parts held together by pegged mortise-and-tenon joints. Shakespeare used joint stool as slang expression for a dull person.
