Early 20th Century 1910-1920 Arthur Simpson Tall Arts and Craft Oak and Leather stool
An early 20th century 1910-1920 taller than average Oak and Leather stool with tapered square section legs is available for sale, attributed to Arthur Simpson of Kendall.
The stool is taller than usual, with a hallmark studded leather top or seat with the added appeal of exposed tenons in the stretcher below. Overall the stool is in good condition, commensurate with its age. The leather is an attractive colour with no tears or splits. Widely accepted by experts as a Simpson design, the stool isn't marked.
Arthur W. Simpson was born in 1847 to a Quaker family in Kendal and apprenticed with Robert Rigg, a cabinet maker in Kendal, and subsequently to Gillows as a carver. Simpson spent his entire life designing furniture, and as an active member of the Arts and Crafts movement, his work is well-made, and his reputation lives on. Simpson died in 1922.
