About the Item

rare and historically significant artist’s stool, attributed to Danish sculptor Hermann Ernst Freund (1786–1840), retaining its original white painted surface. Crafted in Denmark during the 1830s, this utilitarian yet beautifully proportioned piece reflects the aesthetic ideals of the Danish Golden Age, combining simple, functional design with classical refinement. H.E. Freund was one of the most important figures in early 19th-century Danish art and design. A student and later close collaborator of the celebrated sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen, Freund played a central role in introducing Neoclassicism to Denmark. His work deeply influenced the decorative arts, architecture, and furniture of the period. This stool would have been used in Freund’s studio, serving as a working seat for artists and apprentices. Its survival in untouched original paint makes it exceptionally rare, offering a direct connection to the creative environment of one of Denmark’s leading sculptors. A remarkable collector’s piece, it embodies both the artistry and craftsmanship of the period while carrying a unique historical narrative.
