About the Item

Interlaced Stool by Philipp Aduatz Limited Edition of 4 Dimensions: D 30 x W 40 x H 46 cm Materials: Oak, steel. Each piece is unique. The designs of the “Interlaced Stool” and “Interlaced Coffee Table” are influenced by the beauty of failure of a complex television technique. “Interlaced video“ is a technology developed in the late 1920s to reduce the flicker of analog television by doubling the frame rate without consuming extra bandwidth. Because each frame is composed of two fields that are captured at different moments in time, motion artifacts known as “interlacing effects” or “combing” will be displayed if the recorded object is moving fast enough so that each field captures the object in a different position. When the video is displayed at a slower speed than it was captured or when still frames are presented these artifacts are more visible. The “Interlaced Stool” and “Interlaced Coffee Table” are made out of small oak-wood elements which are glued together to build up a complex geometry. To ensure stability steel reinforcements are embedded in the wood. Each piece is unique because the arrangement of its elements is different from the others. Both objects will be produced in an edition of 4 pieces. Vienna-based Designer Philipp Aduatz (born 1982) creates limited-edition functional objects that are highly sculptural in nature. Working with innovative materials and fabrication technologies, Aduatz is very much influenced by scientific matters such as chemistry, physics, and material technologies. His process combines traditional craft concepts and techniques with cutting-edge implements such as 3D printing, 3D laser scanning, CNC milling, and Rapid Prototyping. The experimentation with different materials and their behavior is an important part of his research at the intersection of design and sculpture. Greatly influenced by sculptors such as Constantin Brancusi and Tony Cragg, the designer aims to develop a distinct language of form in each of his pieces, encouraging a new discourse between the object and its user or viewer.
