About the Item

The FIRST Chair is an iconic and sculptural creations conceived by the Italian Architect/Designer Michele De Lucchi. He seems to be paying homage to Alexander Calder in the lightness and mobility of the forms, its true distinctive features. It has also been reference as a visual metaphor for the planet Saturn, quite otherworldly in general. In around 1988, I requested of MEMPHIS srl & Michele if we could produce a series of high barstools using the FIRST Chair as the model (we were working on a Miami Bistro that also ordered 300 regular FIRST Chairs for the tables, so we wanted everything to match). Produced in a small series, the First Barstool reinterprets the original but much higher, but then how do you include the typical footrests on this experiment to resolve the aspect of sitting at ease. Michele offered up a simple solution on the spot ---- create "another" ring (like the armrests), but weld it to the exterior of the four (4) legs. Another "ring around Saturn"!!! A perfect combination of industry and crafts, in true Memphis style. It stands out for the blue adjustable back and the two black spheres that act as armrests, and again, the longer legs & obliging footrest ring.. Michele De Lucchi is a renowned Italian architect, designer, and artist known for his diverse body of work that spans furniture, lighting, and architecture, blending functionality with poetry, and tradition with innovation. A key figure in the Memphis and Alchimia design movements of the 1970s and '80s, he founded the multidisciplinary studio AMDL CIRCLE and designed iconic pieces like the world-renowned Tolomeo lamp.
