A rare and beautifully crafted oak and canvas stool designed by Czech architect and designer Jan Vaněk in the 1940s. This minimalist piece exemplifies the refined elegance and utilitarian spirit of early Mid-Century Modern design in Central Europe.
Vaněk, a prominent figure in Czech functionalism, was known for his rational, human-centric approach to furniture making. This stool embodies his philosophy with its honest use of materials and harmonious proportions. Crafted in solid oak with a warm, honey-toned patina, the frame is defined by its clean lines and subtly tapered legs, joined by cross stretchers for structural integrity.
The seat is made of original handwoven natural canvas webbing in a basket-weave pattern. The webbing is tensioned over gently curved seat rails, providing both comfort and flexibility. The woven texture creates a tactile contrast against the smooth wooden frame and showcases the artisanal craftsmanship typical of Vaněk’s work.
Compact and versatile, this stool can serve as a footrest, extra seating, or a sculptural accent piece. It is particularly well-suited to minimalist, Scandinavian, or Wabi-Sabi inspired interiors.

Jan Vanek
Elegance describes the designs of Jan Vanek.
Influenced by his family’s furniture company, Vandek studied woodworking. Following a stint in Germany, where he advanced his skills at established firms in Munich, Stuttgart and Heilbronn, he returned home to the former Czechoslovakia and took over the family business, which in 1920 became known as Spojené Uměleckoprůmyslové Závody, or UP Závody.
Vanek's early friendships and collaborations with architectural and design greats like Walter Gropius, Le Corbusier, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Adolf Loos and others likely had much to do with his graceful style, best exemplified by his 1930s bentwood chairs, with the arabesque curves of their arms and legs conjoining to form open, dynamic loops.
True to Czech standards for uniformity, Vanek scarcely altered the design over decades of production, though he did gradually modernize his frames: His 1950s models are more angular, industrialized — and very definitely modern.
