About the Item

The Monolith Plinth is a fascinating typology of furniture – one that lies between object and furniture, between sculpture and pedestal. This plinth elegantly brings out the beauty of wood, via construction without glue, and being held together by hidden dowels and coiled paper cord within a recess. The result is a clean, monolithic form with a beautiful combination of two tactile materials. Versatile in its function, the Monolith can be used as a side table, to place decorative objects or as a standalone sculptural piece. Materials: Ash and Paper Cord As a handcrafted product, each piece is unique. Natural qualities of wood could result in variations in color tone, wood grain and the presence of medullary rays or knots. Observations of such differences across products or orders does not constitute a basis for order cancellation or product returns. Designed by Gabriel Tan, handcrafted by Carlos Barbosa and Maria Adelina Ferreira. The Designer Gabriel Tan Studio is a design practice working across the borders of craft, culture and technology. Exploring new ways to interpret luxury and break archetypes, the studio works on product and furniture design for international clients including Blå Station, Design Within Reach, The Conran Shop, Ishinomaki Lab, TAKATA Lemnos and Authentics. Gabriel Tan also creative directs the brands Ariake and Turn. Aside from his design work, he has guest lectured at Lasalle College of the Arts, Pratt Institute, National University of Singapore, the University of Oregon and also served as a jury member at the Cannes Lions Festival. The Craftspeople Carlos Barbosa and his two sons run a wood working factory in Paços de Ferreira. They produce high quality objects and furniture for both local architects and international clients. The unique thing about them is they stock a very large variety of Portuguese and imported hardwoods, and combine the best of hand and machine processes to make high quality products, in small to medium sized production runs. Maria Adelina is a weaver in her 60s who has been passionate about this specific craft since she was eleven. Dona Lina loves challenging the conventional ways of weaving, always experimenting and receiving new techniques from weavers around the world. Her best environment for work is a quiet one, where she can enjoy solitary calmness and be in the flow of weaving. We gain great inspiration from her positive energy, the way she thrives on her work and her eagerness to never stop learning. Care Instructions: Use a dry soft cloth. Do not use household cleaners.
