Pair of Brutalist Tripod Stools, France 1960s

About the Item

Derived from the French word "brut", meaning raw, Brutalism is the architectural style that emerged in the mid-20th century, post–World War II, when low-cost housing and government buildings were composed of mainly unrefined materials favouring structural elements over decorative design. With their minimalist construction, bare materials and natural colour palette, these stools embody Brutalist design characteristics. The essence of Brutalism lies in the celebration of materials and uncompromising forms, and above all, a prioritisation of function over adornment. The aesthetic of these stools is rooted in their rawness, lack of overworked elements, and organic feel. In short, their beauty is most present in the natural imperfections. While the seats are smooth, the grain of the wood becomes a central element of the piece, telling a story of time, growth, and resilience. Crafted with an unwavering commitment to using nothing but wood, they exemplify the artisanal skill of French woodworkers. These stools were evidently constructed with great care as they have seamless joinery. The tripod base once again celebrates the beauty of wood, while ensuring a stable foundation. The splayed, asymmetrical legs are roughly carved, rejecting perfection in the pursuit of true creativity and authenticity. The function of a stool - uncomplicated seating - is achieved through these pieces, that bring together nature with the hand of a talented maker to capture the essence of beautiful design. Today, as the creative world rekindles its romance with Brutalism, this resurgence of interest can be attributed to a longing for honesty and authenticity in an era dominated by mass production. This pair of stools showcases all these qualities, being a symbol of resilience, craftsmanship, and the enduring allure of simplicity, as well as a great addition to any space.
