Pair of Chinese Elm Stools with Hump Back Rail, 1780-1820

About the Item

Pair of square Chinese elm wood "bamboo" stools in the Ming taste. The turned legs have exposed tenons which extend through the two board table top. The tops have a bull nose edge and rounded corners. The turned legs are joined by mortice & tenon hump back rails with elements that wrap around the corners of the legs in the conceit of bamboo strapping. The center of each rail is joined to the seat by two turned vertical posts. The legs have been designed with a slight splay. China, made for the Chinese domestic market, Qing Dynasty, late 18th to early 19th century.
