About the Item

A wonderful pair of very characterful French provincial Fruitwood milking stools crafted in the 19th Century. This pair show all the signs of Folk art craft and the simplistic and honest manor in which they have been made. They remain stable and functional, even though they have been repaired down through the years. It seems to us that at one point the addition of a back support has been worked into the construction of the stools in a different material. They each have the addition of a hole and oval drilled into the back supports, presumably for carrying and hanging the stool up on a hook, to be out of the way. These two stools not only convey the passage of time, but offer us a glimpse into how objects were viewed and the needs of the original owners. With new eyes and the benefit of history we can appreciate these Folk art, French Provincial pieces and also see them for their beauty and how relevant they have become in a contemporary setting. Repaired: Metal bracket joining base to back (old repair) not by us. Additions or alterations made to the original: We believe that piece had an addition to the stool with a back piece, it looks like a very old addition. Please see photos attached:. Replacements made: Possibly that the backs were replaced over time, this is an old replacement. Wear consistent with age and use. Restorations have been made in the past, but not by us. The piece has had a repair made between the base and the back. A metal bracket had been screwed into place to rejoin the two parts in a folksy type manner.
