About the Item

This noble pair of X-frame stools were crafted in the Italian Savonarola style. The frames are brass and wrought iron; they feature thick brown leather slings with with woven leather supports for the seats. Each stool terminates in four bulbous brass finials. The X-frame supports are centered with geometric rosettes. The metal frames feature artfully worn finishes. The brass accents have been given a rich dark patina and the iron looks as though it has been sculpted with a chisel to bring out the shiny silver undertones in the iron. This chair is a reproduction in the style of the late 16th century, created in the 20th century.

The X-frame stool, also known as the curule stool or Dante Chair, is one of the most significant furniture forms in history. The form originated in Egypt, and was the most basic furniture item found in the ancient Egyptian household. In ancient Rome, curule chairs were specifically a symbol of the authority of certain senior government officials, including the emperor. The "sella curulis", as it was known, had practical function beyond its aesthetic and political uses. It was backless so that it wouldn't be too comfortable to sit in for long periods, thus the government officials would be encouraged to perform their roles swiftly, to better serve the people. In the early 19th century, Napoleon adopted many of the symbols and styles of the Roman Empire as a way of outwardly legitimizing his power. One of the symbols he restored at this time was the curule stool. Napoleon sat on the Throne of Dagobert in 1804, which was in fact, a x-frame stool.
