Pair of of Jean Touret Brutalist Bar Stools

About the Item

A superb Brutalist pair of mid-century oak bar stools. The angular and uneven seat tops of each of the two stools is hewn out of a single piece of thick timber with smooth tops with gentle pitted inlay detailing to each. Underneath each seat the oak has been deliberately left rough and unfinished with endearing grooves and gouges and even areas that appear to have been burnt. The tops are supported by three tall hand carved wooden legs with knots and unique grain markings and imperfections. The legs are united by peripheral stretchers to each and finished on rough stumps for feet. The stools are very strong and sturdy and appear to have been made entirely of wood with no modern fixings or iron work. The pair of stools acquired in the Loire region in France are attributed to Jean Touret and the collective Les Artisan De Marroles. The stools are rustic, hand carved and exquisitely proportioned. We believe these to be rare beasts and this is the first time we have been fortunate enough to own stools of this ilk within our collection. Price is for the pair. France, circa 1950.
