About the Item
This pair of well carved Louis XV style tabourets are covered in an elegant floral silk upholstery and stand at just over 21 inches tall. The term tabouret comes from the old French, tabour, (“small drum”), as the original 17th century tabourets resembled a drum. Tabourets are short armless and backless stools that were used by nobility when sitting in the presence of royalty. By the time Louis XV came to power in the 18th century, tabourets had gained popularity and could be found outside of royal residences.
Each tabouret features cabriole legs with scrolled Dutch pad feet. The legs are adorned with an ovate medallion formed by two facing C-scrolls that is topped with a curled rinceaux. Beneath the medallion is an acanthus leaf (known as a roquillard) that runs down to the scrolled feet.
The skirt of each tabouret is embellished with small scrolls (also seen on the edges of the legs). The point where the scrolls meet is adorned with small foliate carvings. In the center of the apron is another ovate medallion, this time with roundels in between the scrolls. The longer sides are festooned in greater detail, with a scalloped shell and a pair of sinuous acanthus leaves surrounding the cartouche. A yellow silk upholstery graces the padded seat. The yellow background material is punctuated by blue and white bands that are adorned with intermittent white, pink, and red flowers.
Our well carved French tabouret stools with silk upholstery can be used in a variety of rooms. At just over 21 inches tall, and with their sinuous Louis XV legs, these stools present very well.
