About the Item

A set of four early 20th-century red-painted chinoiserie stools with hand-painted scenic panels depict idyllic pagodas and floral motifs, rendered in a rich black and gold palette that beautifully contrasts with the vibrant red frames. Intricate fretwork and pierced geometric detailing throughout the backrest, arms, and base emphasize the ornate chinoiserie style, while turned spindles add further refinement to these stunning antique stools. This set of four stools was originally part of a seven-piece salon suite, which included a pair of armchairs and a settee. The suite belonged to the collection of William L. Bernhard and Catherine Cahill, whose Southampton, New York estate reflected their passion for elegant and historic design. Catherine Cahill, the daughter of prominent attorney John T. Cahill, was a noted animal rights activist. William L. Bernhard, a philanthropist and descendant of the Lehman banking family, is recognized for his involvement in the arts and cultural institutions. Pricing reflects individual pieces.
