About the Item

This is a vintage octagonal stool crafted in Japan, dating from the Taisho to early Showa period (1940s–1960s). Made from KIRI (Paulownia wood), a traditional material cherished in Japan for its lightness, resilience, and soft, silvery grain, this piece reflects both function and understated elegance. Its presence is quiet yet compelling the aged surface has taken on a gentle sheen, shaped by time and use. Whether placed in a modern living room, a minimalist entryway, or a traditional setting, it harmonizes effortlessly with its surroundings. This stool is sold as a set of two. The larger measures W:345 D:345 H:420(mm) Smaller W:300 D:300 H:400(mm). When not in use, they nest neatly like Matryoshka —an elegant and practical feature (see photo). Though simple in form, the stool carries the essence of wabi-sabi the Japanese aesthetic that finds beauty in imperfection, impermanence, and modesty. It is a quiet rejection of excess, and a celebration of form shaped by purpose. For generations, Japanese craftspeople have created tools and furnishings using natural, familiar materials, adapting to the demands of everyday life while honoring the rhythms of nature. Over time, these objects accumulate not only wear, but character— absorbing the hands, movements, and moments of those who lived with them. In today’s age of mass production and disposability, to continue using and reimagining what already exists is an act of care— a way to reconnect with the essence of craft and presence. With this philosophy at heart, we carefully seek out and offer antique pieces from across Japan, each one imbued with quiet strength, lasting beauty, and the traces of human hands. This stool is more than a place to sit. It is a vessel of memory, intention, and time.
