About the Item
Oak cloverleaf stool by Marcel Gascoin, ARHEC 1950
Marcel Gascoin (1907-1986) played a major role in the emergence of French design after the Second World War.
Although Marcel Gascoin's first professional experience was designing shop windows in the Faubourg Saint-Antoine, he remained a man of accessible, pragmatic modernism. His first creations followed the development of the Salon des arts ménagers, which focused on modern, economical, high-quality, mass-produced furniture. At the 1938 show, he presented a range of storage units, already showing the beginnings of organic design. In the aftermath of the war, Marcel Gascoin found a second chance thanks to his friendly links with Raoul Dautry and Eugène Claudius-Petit - the ministers responsible for reconstruction - which enabled him to make his mark on the scene. In 1947, he coordinated the Exposition Internationale de l'Urbanisme et de l'Habitation: responsible for a number of stands (kitchen, lighting, AFNOR, etc.), he designed a show flat for the reconstruction of Sotteville-lès-Rouen.
Marcel Gascoin is also a member of the UAM.
UAM members who took part in the construction of the Cité Universitaire d'Antony include Eugène Beaudouin and Jean Prouvé as ‘engineer-builders’, and Marcel Gascoin and Charlotte Perriand as ‘decorator-architects’. They all worked on the development of the residence, driven by a common desire: to renew housing and offer a new living environment suited to the needs of today's people. es of architects, town planners and interior designers

Mobichalet Brutalist set of 4 Solid Wood Chairs 1960
By Mobichalet
Located in Santa Gertrudis, Baleares
Mobichalet, founded by a teacher turned cabinetmaker named Joseph Deffense in Beauraing, Belgium, in 1950, had been active a decade, aiming at furnishing second homes with rustic furnitures, which left a sought after legacy of strikingly powerful and peculiar handcrafted brutalist pieces.
The chairs forming this set are typical of the designer : the seat itself is a solid slab of pine wood, the headrest is thick, a simple rectangular cuboid, and, as expected in a brutalist design, the construction is very simple yet efficient and sturdy with no sharp angles. This extremely nice set features an homogeneous seat height and very good backrest angle through all the chairs, ensuring an unexpected and consistent comfort.
Under the seat, as illustrated in the pictures, the brand logo is directly carved - or drilled - in the wood with large stencil...
