About the Item

Portman Gallery is pleased to offer two Facett swivel chairs by R & E Bouroullec for Ligne Roset. This the chair equivalent of Phoebe Philo’s turn of the century work for Chloe. Designed in 2000, they are only now starting to make sense as turn of the century objects. They overstate their understatement. I see no end in sight for the continued appreciation (monetarily, and culturally) of these forms. Great for people who like: origami, Y2K, to swivel, the noughts, neutrals, 3-D printing, the color blue/gray, Phoebe Philo. This particular set was probably made closer to 2010-2015 because the fabric is in excellent condition. One of the higher price point choices, the cloth is a breathable wool blend that is both cozy and cooling, and stain-resistant. The Bouroullecs have recently announced that they will no longer collaborate. This chair form is easily one of their most successful joint designs. Available to view in Brooklyn. Easy next day local turnaround. Fabric information from LR CODA - Made from 90 % wool, Coda is woven in two different-coloured layers: the shade of the base layer is astonishingly revealed as one approaches the fabric. This distinctive construction serves to accentuate both the three-dimensional character of the fabric and the rhythmic motif of its bold texture. This fabric is both highly durable and easy to clean. WOOL 90%, POLYAMID (NYLON) 10%

Provenance: Francis Sultana, London Sotheby’s, New York, 2021 ‘‘Mattia Bonetti’s artistic creativity is limitless. He has the skill and the imagination to create a range of artistic worlds; from the most meticulous and exact, to the most bizarre and outlandish, his works are always so diverse and yet always retain an element of his own distinctive style.’’ Jacques Granges, Interior Designer. Mattia Bonetti (born 1952) is a Paris-based artist and designer. His work has been called whimsical, surreal and unique. Consistently merging the boundaries between art and design, Bonetti, who was born in Lugano, Switzerland, initially studied textile design at the Centro Scolastico per l’Industria Artistica. Moving to Paris in 1972, Bonetti initially worked within his chosen field of textile design, but then developed a career as a stylist and photographer. Working in black and white film, Bonetti would shoot miniature interiors that he had made by hand, which in turn led to his love of furniture. Bonetti’s work has always begun with a free-hand sketch, which is then fabricated in materials including patinated bronze, gilding, acrylic, wood, rock crystal, marble, glass and gemstones. In the 1970s Bonetti met the designer Elizabeth Garouste, and their partnership began with the interior décor of the famous Parisian nightclub Le Palace and restaurant Le Privilege. Employing a neo-Baroque language, blended with prehistoric and primitive touches, Bonetti’s terracotta...

Josef Albers from White Embossings on Gray Series, Print II
By Josef Albers
Located in Brooklyn, NY
“In order to use colour effectively it is necessary to recognise that colour deceives continually.” Josef Albers “We never really perceive what colour really is, as it physically is. This fact makes colour the most relative medium in art.” Josef Albers “The structures are irrational statements which illustrate the artist’s claim that the eye seeks, in endless exploration, to fathom and master the contradictions of reversed symmetry. One begins to study the structure at some point where isometric order is suggested. One finds evidence for the reading of the work, but when one tries to take in the whole structure as a unit, new evidence requires a drastic reorganization of the work’s implications. That which was above shifts to below, that which was negative becomes positive, that which was full becomes vacant, that which was in front has moved to the rear. Having found a balance, the eye’s testing...
