Child's Sackback Windsor Armchair
About the Item
This diminutive armchair closely follows the decorative elements and construction techniques of the full-size armchairs that were made in Pennsylvania during the second half of the eighteenth century; like the finest examples of miniature and child's furniture, it closely imitates the proportions of full-size furniture. The presence of its early red and black paint makes it a very fine and desirable example of child's furniture.
A virtually identical example is illustrated in Herbert F. and Peter B. Schiffer, Miniature Antique Furniture (Wynnewood, PA, 1972), p. 91, no. 84.

Located in Middleburg, VA
Rare Child's Windsor Armchair. Made predominantly of yew wood and ash with a figured elm seat. Simple turned legs over "Crinoline" shaped stretchers. Beautiful color and a deep patina. Made in Buckinghamshire, England circa 1820.
A rare and exceptionally well-preserved child's Windsor armchair, crafted in Buckinghamshire, England circa 1820. This charming and finely scaled example exemplifies early 19th-century English vernacular design, made predominantly of richly figured yew wood and ash, with a beautifully grained elmwood seat carved from a single plank.
The hooped back is flanked by hand-turned spindles, flowing gracefully into shaped arms supported by balustar-turned arm supports. The seat is deeply sculpted and retains a warm, timeworn patina, showcasing the natural beauty of the elm. Below, simple turned legs are joined by an elegant crinoline stretcher- a particularly desirable detail in children's Windsor chairs...
