Import and Rare Early to Mid-18th Century Walnut Wingback Armchair

About the Item
The superb and well carved details depict eagle heads with beautifully crafted beaks and feathered necks, acanthus leaves to the knee and outstanding shell carved motif on the apron. The front legs terminating with collars at the ankles and claw and ball feet, the seat rails constructed of beech and the back rail of ash. The carved eagle heads are backed onto original walnut earpieces which tenon into the front legs as expected. One of the Eagles heads was replaced in the 19th Century, and has now been sensitively re-carved this to a higher standard to match the original and exceptional quality of early 18th Century craftsmanship. The frame is now upholstered with horse hair stuffing and hessian cover and is ready to take the finishing material. The front rail with old inventory number written as ‘E4956’. English, circa 1740. (Seat Height: 48cm, or 19?)
