About the Item

France, late 19th to early 20th century Likely by a Parisian atelier in the manner of Maison Jansen or Maison Krieger Dimensions: 41.5″ H × 32.25″ W × 25″ D A handsome French Louis XV-style painted fauteuil à oreilles (“wingback armchair”), with closed wings, shaped backrest, and sinuous cabriole legs terminating in scroll feet. The frame is finely carved with foliate and shell motifs and retains traces of the original soft cream paint with gilt highlights. Upholstered in a luxurious floral damask with raised woven motifs in shades of golden ochre, dusty rose, and russet, contrasted by burnt orange velvet on the reverse. The upholstery reflects the sumptuous layered palette characteristic of fabrics produced by Old World Weavers, the textile house founded by Iris and Carl Apfel and celebrated for its opulent historic reproductions. The refined carving, elegant proportions, and quality of construction suggest creation by a Parisian furniture maker working in the manner of Maison Jansen or Maison Krieger, both active during the late 19th and early 20th centuries and renowned for their interpretations of Louis XV and Louis XVI forms. Provenance: The Iris Apfel Collection Condition: Good overall condition. Minor paint loss and wear to frame, one leg with an old repair, seat webbing slightly relaxed. Upholstery shows light wear and age-appropriate fading. Presents beautifully and remains sturdy and comfortable. About Iris Apfel: Iris Apfel (1921–2024) was an American design icon known for her fearless use of pattern, color, and historic references. With her husband Carl, she founded Old World Weavers, a firm commissioned for prestigious restorations, including the White House. This piece reflects her signature aesthetic—mixing French elegance with a confident, layered sensibility.
