About the Item

A pair of Sculptural Highback Wingchairs with frames of oak. Upholstered with lightblue and sandcoloured fabric. Made and designed circa 1940-42. Design and execution attributed to cabinetmaker Otto Færge. The Chairs are a great testament to the level of craftsmanship that was the the foundation of the development of Danish Modern in the 1950s. These chairs made during the war years and executed in locally available oak excel with a great sculptural yet grounded sturdy presence with a form that brings Italian postwar design to mind ...while actually preceeding that. Otto Færge was a cabinetmaker in Copenhagen that ran a combined workshop, furniture store and interior design studio from his address on Aaboulelvard 42. The promotional tagline was ‘distinctive furniture according to the assignment’ so while presenting both own models as well as retailing some from other makers, they could also supply their own variations according to a clients wishes. Reference material for Otto Færge is very sporadic and what little exist show only a fraction of the multitude of models and individual variations made by the workshop. While no exact period images show this exact model several show highback chairs and sofas of same general form also most often in oak.
