Antique Homeopathic Apothecary Box

The lid interior of this mahogany box is lined with leather and gives the details of E. Gould & Son, Chemists of 59 Moorgate Street E.C. The box is well made with visible dovetails to the corners and the top fixed by flush brass screws with their slots neatly lined up. Aside from the name to the lid interior there are also 2 pockets stamped plaster; one containing an envelope of arnica sheets and the other calendula. Six bottles stand upright to the back of the box with a compartment to the front of them. The Stepping Stone to Homeopathy and Health with Clinical Directory by Dr. Ruddock sits in this area leaving space for other sundries. To the front of the box is a pullout drawer with flush campaign handle that is released when the brass locking pin to the box edge above is removed. This drawer contains 2 bottles to either side of a middle compartment holding a cloth with a leather pad lid marked Lint and Oiled Silk. The 4 bottles to the drawer all have labels for E. Go uld whereas the others do not with one marked A. Duckworth of Ilkley and the others having no supplier’s name. One of the drawer bottles also notes that Gould have been supplying the London Homeopathic Hospital for over 40 years. The exact year of establishment of E. Gould is not known but it is thought it may be 1849. This is the year that the London Homeopathic Hospital was founded in Golden Square, Soho and Edward Gould had strong ties to it, possibly working there as a porter before he became a chemist. In 1861 he is listed at 100 Pentonville Road but by 1865 he moved to 32 Moorgate Street, before moving to number 59. The family also had strong ties with Australia with Gould’s eldest son, also called Edward, moving to Melbourne in 1860 where he opened up a chain of homeopathic chemists. Although the presence of one bottle dating no earlier than 1889 is present in the box it could be a later replacement as there are a variety of labels to the bottles. However, the box is well made and a little different to most apothecary boxes. Late 19th Century.
