Bonnetière Française De Style Louis 15 En Merisier Massif Mid 19th Century

About the Item

This exquisite 19th-century French bonnetière, crafted in solid cherrywood, beautifully combines the rustic simplicity of southern bastide furniture with the refined elegance of the Louis XV style—a rare and sought-after balance. The single-door cabinet opens to reveal three fixed shelves, ideal for storing linens or tableware. Thanks to its generous interior depth, it can also be easily converted into a wardrobe for hanging clothes. The door retains its original working lock and key. The iron escutcheon is finely wrought and richly detailed. The upper crosspiece features a rare inlay of precious woods depicting fantastical animals, while the lower scalloped apron is inlaid with a stylized flower vase—both showcasing the craftsmanship and artistic sensibility of the cabinetmaker. The three interior shelves have been cleaned with a 100% natural, biological treatment, eliminating any odors and making the piece perfectly suited for immediate use, even with delicate textiles. The cabinet stands on four solid legs: the rear ones are straight, while the front legs are carved in the signature Louis XV “escargot” scroll style. This type of piece, often commissioned as a bespoke item, was particularly fashionable in the 19th century in southern France. This specific example comes from a family estate in the Loire Valley, a region renowned for its rich artisanal traditions and elegant rural interiors. Recently restored using a fine sandblasting technique (aérogommage), the bonnetière now reveals its original natural patina and the warm, honeyed tones of cherrywood. Its timeless charm makes it a striking addition to both traditional and modern interiors.
