Late 19th Century Apothecary Shop Cabinet

About the Item

A authentic German or Belgian apothecary's shop cabinet from around 1900. Two-part side-moulded oak body consisting of base and shelf unit. The base cabinet has a door and 9 drawers under a slightly protruding top panel. The flat open shelf with moulded cornice and 4 shelf levels and a door, behind which there are a further 2 small shelves, stands on top. The shelves are all made of poplar wood and can also be removed. Beautiful original iron handles fitted. Dimensions Height: 100.5 cm (base unit) or 261 cm (total) / 39.56 inch (base unit) or 102.75 inch (total). Width: 205 cm or 213 cm (headboard) / 80.70 inch or 83.85 inch (headboard). Depth: 22 cm (top shelf) or 56 cm / 8.66 inch (top shelf) or 22.04 inch. Shelf depth: 18.5 cm or 47.5 cm / 7.28 inch or 18.7 inch. Height distance between the shelves in the top section: 26 cm / 10.23 inch. Internal dimensions of the drawers: 14.5 cm / 5.7 inch high, 55.5 cm / 21.85 inch wide, 48.5 cm / 19.09 inch deep. The cabinet can be transported in 2 parts (base unit/shelf unit).

    A Gothic Revival reliquary. Circa late 19th / early 20th century. Made of solid oak with fine carving. Reliquaries have been used to store relics since the Middle Ages. In sacred architecture they are often located behind the main altar in the chancel. In addition to classical, often church-like caskets, anthropomorphic, so-called "speaking" reliquaries were also made, which already inform the viewer about their contents through their own design. Mostly they were made of precious metals and decorated with rich sculptural ornaments or precious stones. One of the most famous examples of reliquaries is the Epiphany shrine of Nicholas of Verdun from the late 12th or early 13th century in Cologne Cathedral.
