About the Item

A smaller size British colonial storage trunk constructed from large solid plank of West Indian mahogany. The cast-iron hinged cover and the base have a deep ebony molded edge secured with wood dowels. The side panels, too, have been framed with an ebony edge. The front features an elaborate pierced brass escutcheon surrounded by four oxidized brass knobs, the original lock and large key present. The sides have beautifully cast bronze bail lift handles. Inside, two large cast-iron hinges secure the lid to the back. The trunk rests on two hand-hewn wood trestles each with one large turned mahogany bun foot in the front. From previously Portuguese, British-occupied colonial India (Goa coast), circa mid-19th century. British colonials owned a number of chests. The many moves from post to post undertaken by officials of the trading companies in the course of their careers made the chest an indispensable item of furniture in every household. They were mainly used for storage, but due to their striking appearance also served as a display of wealth by the owner. West Indian mahogany (Swietenia mahagoni) is a reddish-brown wood and it has been useful for making furniture. The timber was imported from the West-Indies. It is very strong, seasons quickly and does not tend to warp and split, is seldom attacked by woodworm and is a good timber to work. Mahogany could be obtained in large enough pieces to make large table-tops and chests without joining, which had not been possible before, and not only does it take a pleasing smooth finish but is excellent for carving. Ebony (Diospyrus Ebenum) is a black wood of very close grain and heavy in weight.
