About the Item
This exceptional antique cassone, or dowry chest, was crafted in Italy circa 1830 from richly patinated walnut. Standing on five deeply carved scrolled feet, the base features a shaped apron adorned with gadroon and foliate motifs. The front panel is framed with exquisite hand-carved floral garlands and centered by a medallion of entwined foliage, flanked by finely sculpted female figures at each corner symbolizing abundance and virtue. Both sides are fitted with wrought-iron handles for easy transport, while the hinged rectangular lid opens to reveal a spacious interior newly lined in vivid red fabric for contrast and preservation. The back remains in its original state, attesting to age and authenticity.
This Italian Renaissance-style marriage chest is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, and displays a warm, lustrous walnut finish. A decorative yet functional piece, it would make a distinguished addition at the foot of a bed, in an entryway, or beneath a window as a bench with concealed storage.
