About the Item

Georgian Mahogany Chest of Drawers, 19th c., the molded top inset in moulded surround, with three graduated drawers, on shaped bracket feet, H.- 40 in., W.- 42 in., D.- 21 in. When purchased from dealer, note inside stated: English chest on chest, circa 1821, new legs made for this chest so it may be used as a separate chest This is a classic Georgian chest of drawers, characterized by its refined proportions and understated elegance, typical of the 18th century. Key Features: Material: Made from richly grained mahogany, which was a favored wood during the Georgian period for its strength, workability, and luxurious appearance. Form: The chest has a simple rectangular form with a molded edge on the top and a solid plinth base raised on bracket feet, which are lightly scrolled—a hallmark of early to mid-Georgian furniture. Drawers: There are three full-width drawers, each fitted with brass batwing backplate handles and keyholes, indicating that the drawers were originally lockable. The drawers are outlined with thin beaded or cockbead molding, a subtle decorative touch used to protect and frame the edges. Finish: The wood has a deep, polished patina that enhances its natural figure, showing off the beauty of the mahogany veneers or solid fronts. Style Context: This chest is a fine example of George II or George III design—marked by balanced proportions, minimal ornamentation, and an emphasis on craftsmanship and fine materials. It would have originally been used in a bedroom or dressing room, offering both utility and stately elegance. A timeless piece, it remains a desirable form in both antique and traditional interiors.
