Antique French Neo Gothic Style Trunk

About the Item

Many trunks were commissioned by families to have hand carved motifs which represented the owner’s interests. This resplendent work of hand carved ornamentation has motifs of the neo gothic style of ornamentation. This is by far, one of the most beautiful trunks we have ever had. There are too many varying motifs to mention all of them. However, some that are of interest are: the right front panel has a lion with a man’s face called a” Manticore”. The Manticore is a Persian legendary creature similar to the Egyptian sphinx. It has the body of a red lion and a human head. To the left of the center panel is “The Phoenix”, which is a long-lived bird that is cyclically regenerated or reborn. Associated with the sun, the Phoenix obtains new life by arising from the ashes of its predecessor. The center panel with a vase of stylized lotus flowers has meanings which range from divine purity and enlightenment, as in Buddhism, wealth, as in Hinduism, to rebirth, as in the ancient Egyptian religion. Of particular note, however, is the top which has a central Coat of Arms panel featuring supporters of rampant lions astride a shield with stripes having the scales of justice on one side and a sword and plumed pen on the other side.The pen is mightier than the sword means, i.e., thinking and writing have more influence on people and events than the use of force or violence. The scales of justice have long functioned as a symbol for equality and fairness, found all over the world in diverse cultures. Surrounding the shield are more motifs of neo gothic ornamentation and a canted crest. The interior has two open accessory boxes on either side and the rest of the interior is open storage space. Long circa 1800 Gothic Style Oak Board Trunk from France

This is an unusually long Gothic style trunk from France, measuring nearly 6.5 feet long. It is carved from thick oak planks, and it dates to circa 1800. The trunk has well carved characteristic Gothic ornamentation on all of the front panels, while the rest of the piece remains simple, except a small molding to the lid. The big oak panels are joined by dowel reinforced mortise and tenon construction. The long single plank lid is attached by iron hinges and opens to reveal a large rectangular space which reveals how all the boards were assembled. There is also a latch and keyhole at the center. Large Antique Chinese Lacquered Trunk or Blanket Chest

The chest has dark reddish brown lacquered wood on the outside and the inside is lined with tan imitation leather material. There are three brass latches, one large one in front and a smaller one on each side next to iron handles.
