About the Item

Magnificent antique Indonesian Maduran smaller merchants chest or treasure trunk composed of hand carved, painted, & gilded camphor wood with patinated brass hardware & handles & new working key. Beautiful condition, keeping in mind that this is vintage and not new so will have signs of use and wear even if it has been refinished or restored. Specifically, a new working key was made by our artisan staff & there are no outstanding flaws just its beautiful natural age patina including a few nicks, dings, and cracks that do not detract from its overall vintage beauty. Please see photos, zoom in for details, and see long description as they are part of the condition report. We attempt to portray any imperfections. Circa, 19th to Early 20th Century. WOW!!! … You can put some cool “Junk in THIS TRUNK!!!” LOL… Joking aside… This is a WONDERFUL antique 19th to early 20th Century Indonesian Maduran merchants chest or treasure trunk composed of camphor wood bearing all-over intricately hand carved & gilded ornate details featuring fabulous floral motifs on the façade, gorgeous hand painted jade green backing & all surrounded with lovely hand painted ruby red trim. It has an incredible hinged lid with a new sculpted working key & lock, patinated brass handles on each side, and a hand painted red deep interior. WHEW!!! This is one BEAUTIFUL BOX folks!!! These chests often reflect the cultural traditions in Indonesia and are considered valuable artifacts with the primary function of storing personal items. And… Camphor wood is comparable to cedar wood considering its durability and insect repelling elements so, any delicate linens should be safely stowed for years to come. These chests have many names including merchants chest, wedding or dowry chest, blanket chest, and treasure trunk… just to name a few!! This one is smaller than a standard “Hope,” “Wedding,” or “Dowry” chest and may hold a thinner blanket or a sheet or 2 and some of your smaller treasures but it’s not quite tall enough for larger or bulky items. It would be awesome in a dressing area for a few pairs of shoes & accessories, in your sitting or living room holding a few books & media, or in your study or office used as a safe space to store & lock away private items like bank statements, bills, & cash. It would even be a great side table, foot stool, or a small coffee table!! This elaborately decorative chest will blend with so many design styles besides its Indonesian origin… ranging from Rustic and Spanish Revival to Mid-Century Modern, Hollywood Regency, Asian, and many styles in between. It is unique, fully functional, absolutely FABULOUS, and it’s ready to grace your home with its alluring and rather phenomenal ornate presence!!! Call it a Merchants Chest, Call it a Small Wedding Chest or Dowry, or Call it a Treasure Trunk… but whatever you choose to call this MAGNIFICENT Indonesian piece… You MUST call it YOURS!!!!
