About the Item

A handsome wide Italian walnut Cassone. Intricately carved gothic style narrative carvings on the front along the side, bottom, and center. Rich patinated burnt umber color wood finish. 17th century circa 1680. Provenance: Originally from Newport collection then to a private collection. The frieze on the front depicts a battle scene that is mythological. The figures on the right and left appear to depict the Greek characters Eurynome and Poseidon (Bellerophon's parents). Bellerophon is riding a Pegasus striking at a chimera. An Imp dances in the foreground. A ship rides on the sea in the background, likely a reference to Poseidon. The faces on the bottom and the feet are also imp-like creatures and are probably located in the underworld. In good condition. Some gentle wear consistent with age and use. The back contains more wear while the front and top are in very good condition. No obvious markings on the piece. A sign of what used to be a faded stamp is on the back. This piece would make a great feature in any home. Ideal for use in a living room, front entry, or dining room.
