An excellent example of the classic dome top Spanish "arcón" or travel chest / trunk. Constructed of wood, the exterior is completely covered in a dark brown leather and the top and front feature studded brass nails arranged in decorative patterns. The nailheads themselves are decorated with raised star shape. The functioning lock mechanism (key included), hasp and side carry handles are original and made of wrought iron. Included are a pair of matching studded leather "feet" or supports which raise the trunk off of the floor allowing air to circulate, thus protecting the bottom from moisture. This Spanish trunk from the 18th century features a long rectangular-shaped top which rests above a beautifully carved case adorn with a leaf motif moldings and geometrically designed panels with decorative accents within their centres. Front paw feet project out beneath the thickly molded skirt. The trunk's interior offers a large open storage space. This 18th century Spanish chest is an overall rich, brown color with beautiful aging throughout. The back-side of this piece remains un-decorated, therefore best use would be against a wall, bed, or sofa. Rare early 20th century handcrafted Zanzibar blanket chest with brass metal overlay and brass studs throughout. The antique trunk is comprised of solid carved teak wood and features ornate brass interior hinges. The interior is also fitted with a candle box on the upper left corner. The chest is adorned with ornate brass metal corner plates and brass studs throughout, creating a series of geometric symbols and Moorish inspired patterns. The patterns on the top of the trunk are said to symbolize the Fountain of Youth. The chest features a hand-carved ebonized wood base and brass carrying handles. Exquisitely detailed with magnificent craftsmanship. Originally used for travels and often for the exports of good. Makes a great coffee table or accent piece or entryway chest.
