About
Isabella Queen of Castile and Leon, Ferdinand of Aragon, Navarre
This amazing armorial trunk has the hand carved armorial shields of Queen Isabella I of Castile and Leon and King Ferdinand II of Aragon, Navarre. The large eagle shields are carved in relief on the top plank. They are quartered with the castle and lion, the cross of Navarre, and the Aragon flag. On the front of the trunk are the carved likenesses of the King and Queen in relief. They flank a large lock which is surrounded by carved curling leaves. At either end of the front panel are animals holding a margent of fruit and foliation. The sides have the large hand forged iron handles within more ornamentation, and there is a linear border of leaves carved out of pine along its base. The top of the trunk is opened via a large iron pull.
The unification of Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand II supported the founding of the New World, and led Spain to become the first dominant global superpower. This is a very unique and meaningful piece, and will be quite a topic of conversation anywhere it is placed.
