About the Item

An extremely good example of an early beech coffer with original escutcheon and hinges. The warm, rich patina is indicative of its age and long-term use. The chest features hand-forged iron strap hinges and a decorative lock plate, which are typical of early chests. The ironwork, including the hand-wrought side handles. The decorative scalloped base skirt along the base is characteristic of some regional English or European designs from the 17th century, giving it a more ornate and crafted feel. The joinery has mortise and tenon joints, and there’s evidence of pegs or nails that could be rose-headed, typical of this period of construction. Chests like this were often used for storage of linens, clothing, or valuables and were multi-purpose pieces in early homes. France, early 1600s
