British Camphor Wood Military Campaign Trunk with Curved Top and Brass Hardware

About the Item

A late 19th century arched top camphor wood British military campaign chest, with original brass hardware. Built of durable materials and designed for travel, these rugged wooden chests were originally developed to carry the belongings of military officers during campaigns in a wide variety of climates (camphor wood being naturally resistant to both humidity and insects). By the turn of the 20th century, with both improved transportation methods and changes in military strategies, British forces opted for a more mobile and efficient fighting force, and thus an officer's need for this type of furniture came to an end. Many of these "ex-campaign " pieces have moved on into civilian life, carrying with them the romantic air of past adventures. This chest features double locks with key included.
