About the Item
Carpenter's Chest Bossche School Style, The Netherlands, 1960s.
This is a very unusual and unique carpenter’s chest in a very distinct Bossche School style, made in The Netherlands, 1960s.
The Bossche School style was a traditionalist architectural movement in The Netherlands from the 1960s onwards, based on theories of Dom Hans van der Laan, a Benedictine monk and architect whose work emphasized the importance of proportion and the harmonious relationship between space and form. It revolves around his theory called 'Het Plastische Getal': a proportional system based on the X3−X−1 formula, an irrational number, known in mathematics as the 'plastic number'.
It all started with a three-year course named 'Cursus Kerkelijke Architectuur' which was lectured in 's Hertogenbosch (hence: Bossche School) by tutors Dom Hans van der Laan, Nico van der Laan and Cees Pouderoyen. Lots of churches were heavily damaged or destroyed by WWII and the course set out a new and modern approach to church building and church architecture.
This philosophy extended into the realm of furniture design, where each piece was crafted not only to serve a practical purpose but also to enhance the spatial experience of the user. During the 1960's until the 1980's the Bossche School style was quite popular in The Netherlands and numerous buildings, houses and sometimes complete neighborhoods were designed by a select group of influenced architects.
This chest could well be made by one of the Bossche School artists or could be made by a cabinetmaker out of the entourage of one of the Bossche School architects. It is a one off piece and truly a rare find, therefore it is a true collectable.
Made out of painted wood, the chest shows a very honest and hand made quality. Beautiful contrast between the grey outside and the red inside - both colors which were used by architects who are considered to be practitioners of the Bossche School.
The chest shows wonderful details like the strap made out of cow hide, the numerous tool-holders which can be found inside and the delicate and almost over the top execution of the inner compartiment of the chest.
