Early 19th Century Swedish Inlaid Trunk with Marquetry

About the Item

Early 19th century Swedish Inlaid trunk with Marquetry is a remarkable example of craftsmanship in the creation of artistically produced heirloom pieces designed to be enjoyed for centuries! The outer casework is old-growth seasoned oak, while the interior is lined with cedar to protect the contents stored within. There's even the candle box with a separate lid so that the family could keep valuable candles under lock and key, back in the days before electric lighting which we all too frequently take for granted. Hand-forged elaborate strap hinges, key guard and handles with guards on the sides indicate a like-minded blacksmith's work. Boldly molded top and base are augmented by bun feet which keep the piece off the floor. The most amazing aspect, however, is the extraordinary inlay bordering and marquetry artistry that appears in two panels on the top depicting jardinieres with wild flowers, on each side, and on the front with stylized avian and foliate scenes separated by a vase with flowers, all rendered from a variety of woods to provide different textures and colors to create artwork that will truly transcend time itself! circa 1840 Measures 25.5H x 48W x 25.5D.
