About the Item

A superb example of an Indian (Gujarat) dowry chest with ornate frame, iron reinforcements and wheels. These chests were used to hold blankets and other valuables. The small upper door could be locked. Chests this large were owned by wealthy people and often displayed in a part of the home accessible to visitors. The dramatic "X" braces are primarily a design element but do provide extra protection.
