Late 17th Century Tuscan Italian Walnut Cassone

About the Item

This nicely detailed walnut Italian cassone or chest is from the late 17th century approx. circa 1680 to 1700. Formally part of the collection of a Frick museum board member the piece centers on its main decorative element the central front panel carved with opposing mythical beasts rampant holding a shield containing a family crest. The panel is also carved with arabesques and acanthus leaves creating a rich Renaissance theme. The wood has a deep rich walnut color and the carving is deep and well modeled. The construction is correct for the period as are the hinges and is in fact remarkably well preserved throughout. The heavy Tuscan form and masculine nature place this from the region.
