Paint Decorated “Unicorn” Blanket Chest
About the Item
This wonderful blanket chest bears striking similarity, from its tripartite arch and black-and-white unicorn decoration and compass-decorated sides, to a chest in a private collection illustrated in Monroe H. Fabian, The Pennsylvania-German Decorated Chest (New York, 1978), p. 205, no. 233.
The unicorn motif was a popular one in Berks County, and is derived from European influences.
