About the Item

Description Solid fir frame trunk covered with red velvet in fine squares arranged in a rhombus pattern and straight frames of embossed sheet metal with plant and heraldic motifs. The sheet metal used was cut from solid wood carved to size with a chisel and embossed. This in addition to embellishing the work was necessary to cover the wooden structure. Trunks of this type and size were usually placed at the foot of the bed and contained spare linens. The work in question is so richly decorated that it is certainly believed to have been commissioned by a family of high rank, as evidenced by the embossed coats of arms on the perimeter frame of the lid. It also has a leather-covered back instead of exposed wood . . The side handles used for possible movement, the central lock are coeval.
