Zanzibar 19th Century Dowry Chest

About the Item

A rare mid 19th century Zanzibar chest out fitted with bronze sheet and brass studs in a stunning design on the front, sides and top. Dowry chests have a well documented history as icons of the Eastern hemisphere. A Zanzibar chest was essential in a marriage agreement and the style and size often served as a status symbol of the brides family. A number of legends proliferated along the East African coast, most involving a Persian Prince marrying a Swahili Princess. This chest is structurally and cosmetically sound consistent with age and normal use. The three bottom drawers of this chest are each shortened leaving a secret compartment behind the drawers. A fantastic statement piece and would be the perfect focal point in any room.
