19th Century Burr Oak William IV Bookcase from England

About the Item

This Fine Antique William IV Burr Oak Bookcase is a piece of furniture from the William IV era, which lasted from 1830 to 1837 in England. This bookcase features both functional and decorative elements characteristic of this period's design style. The upper section of the bookcase consists of two glazed doors, allowing a clear view of the items stored inside. The glass doors are framed with quarter-round fluted columns, which are cylindrical columns with fluted (ridged) designs along their surfaces. This design element adds a touch of elegance and visual interest to the piece. Inside the upper section, there are three adjustable shelves, providing flexibility for arranging and displaying various objects. The upper section is crowned with a moulded cornice adorned with dentil carved detail. The term "dentil" refers to a small, rectangular, tooth-like carving that adds texture and ornamentation to the cornice. The lower section of the bookcase comprises a two-door cupboard which doors feature ebony line inlay on each door panel, which is a decorative technique involving the use of contrasting ebony wood to create intricate patterns or lines. This inlay adds a touch of sophistication and contrast to the oak surface. Similar to the upped doors, the lower doors are flanked by quarter-round fluted columns, maintaining visual continuity with the upper section. The lower cupboard provides additional storage space. There is an shelf within the cupboard, offering added storage. The bookcase stands on a plinth base, which is a solid and often broader base that provides stability and support to the furniture. In this case, the plinth base serves as a foundation for the entire bookcase structure. Circa 1835, aligns with the William IV era and the characteristics of design and craftsmanship associated with that time. Overall, this Fine Antique William IV Burr Oak Bookcase is a prime example of the design sensibilities and craftsmanship of the early 19th century. Its combination of quarter-round fluted columns, ebony line inlay and dentil carved cornice demonstrates the attention to detail and aesthetic refinement that were prominent during the William IV period.
