19th century French carved oak hunt cabinet Renaissance bookcase sideboard fox ~ Direct from France ~ This hand carved cabinet is one of those antiques that really just cause you to step back for a minute and study the details…the amazing details that were hand carved in the natural light, long before electricity and sophisticated tools. We’re quite sure this would have been a commissioned piece, created for French aristocracy, in the 19th century, to celebrate and flaunt their wealth and good fortune ~ From the top…large hand carved crown features branches and twigs with life-like carved oak leaves with wide bands of ribbon framing the large center cartouche with dimensional carved fox head ~ The large open upper shelves have beveled rounded edges, with open carved griffin supports and carved griffin sides. Intricate details, from the teeth and eyes, to the muscles on the body, the open wings and scaled fish tails! ~ Two center back panels include carved serpent heads and foliate floral around center oval cartouches ~ The large base, with carved beveled edges, has a stepped out center, and raised, carved floral cascades on the sides of the door panels ~ Frieze with three drawers, each having center brass pulls nestled in carved floral details ~ Triple doors have dimensional carvings in the center panels that reflect “fruits of the hunt”. Left door features a pair of fish among ribbon and oak leaves. Right door features a snipe among the ribbon and oak leaves. And the “piece de resistance”, the center door oval medallion has a large fox/dog and pheasant. This is a most unique presentation and one we have not seen previously! ~ Solid oak, heavy, heavy and strong well built by craftsmen of the period, ~ circa 1850 Measurements: 93” height x 81” x 23”. That’s almost 8 feet tall and 7 feet length! The server is three separate pieces; bottom base with doors, the upper open shelving, and the top carved crown. Base with double doors, 42.5” height x 81” x 23”. Center shelf section, 34.5” height x 73.5” x 14”. Upper crown, 16” height x 47” length. Note: All of our antiques are direct from Europe.
