20th Century Italian Giraffa Bookcase / Room Divider By Paolo Tilche For Arform

About the Item

A mid-20th Century bookcase or room divider produced in the 1960s by Arform, designed by Paolo Tilche. Featuring wooden uprights, black painted wood end pieces, adjustable black terminals all of which can be arranged and assembled according to the user’s needs. The design is often referenced as “cielo-terra“ (literally translates to “sky-earth”) because the bookcase stretches from the floor to the ceiling. It has quite a lot of play in terms of the height (from about 280cm to about 310cm) which means it should fit most modern properties. As such, it can be used as a wall unit but also as a room divider, thus offering an elegant and ingenious way of creating zones within a large space or simply an elegant bookshelf, all the while maintaining an Italian retro chic which so characterises Paolo Tilche’s work. The unit is of extremely high quality, with screws and detailing in brass and also combines a small drawer unit and a drinks cabinet. A wonderful way of uplifting any room with a style that is both vintage and contemporary. Paolo Tilche (1925–2003) was born in Egypt. He graduated from the Politecnico di Milano in 1949 and then worked as an architect. In 1950, he began his career as an architect and made numerous residential, industrial, and office designs, but one of his most acclaimed designs is the Hotel Raya in Panarea. He was a member of the Associazione per il Disegno Industriale (ADI) and became better known for his industrial and furniture designs and for the use of innovative shapes. He designed lighting and glassware (with Barbini), plastic and wooden furniture (with Artform), and kitchenware (with Fratelli Guzzini). In 1955, he opened a Milan-based design store called Arform and dedicated himself to the design industry. To this day the store still sells objects and furniture designed by Tilche and other international designers. We offer complimentary shipping to all our customers in Great Britain. 20th Century Italian "Alanda" Coffee Table By Paolo Piva For B&B Italia c.1980
By B&B Italia, Paolo Piva
Located in Royal Tunbridge Wells, Kent
A B&B Italia coffee table by designed by Paolo Piva, made in Italy around the 1980s. This elegant coffee table consists of a geometric black lacquered base consisting of four inverted pyramidal structures of equal size supporting a thick clear glass table top. The design was an instant success and is already a design classic. Available in a multitude of colour combinations, this particular example has a beautiful clear glass top which together with its black lacquered metal base, gives a sense of light and space to any interior. A contemporary classic. About the manufacturer: the international design company B&B Italia began in 1973 when Piero Ambrogio Busnelli took over C&B Italia, the company he had co-founded with Cesare Cassina. The renamed B&B was thus more of an evolution than a completely new enterprise. Busnelli, who was born in 1926 in Meda in the northern province of Lombardy, was a true visionary in post-war Italy. As a young designer he surrounded himself with other like-minded artists, and later took chances on up-and-coming talents, like Mario Bellini and Gaetano Pesce, who later followed Busnelli to B&B. From the beginning, the company wanted to set itself apart as a strong, modern Italian brand that was based on an industrial model, utilising both high-tech production methods and high-tech materials including plastics and polyurethane foams. It quickly established itself as one of the leading manufacturers of modern Italian design in the second half of the 20th century. Busnelli located the headquarters in Novedrate in Como, near Milan. It was designed in 1972 by the architects Renzo Piano and Richard Rogers, who had just finished jointly designing the Centre Pompidou in Paris, and the influence is clear. The building’s brave industrial “inside out” aesthetic showcased Busnelli’s willingness to take risks, as well as predict future design stars. In the mid-1970s, B&B Italia launched Mario Bellini’s Le Bambole sofa (1972). The structureless, yet plump couch pushed the boundaries of design and secured a place for B&B Italia at the forefront of the international design scene, and at the receiving end of many prestigious design prizes. The advertising campaign for Le Bambole provoked as many reactions as the design itself, featuring provocative images taken by photographer Oliviero Toscani of the bare-chested model Donna Jordan on top of Bellini's sofa, and was exhibited at Milan’s Salone del Mobile. Since then, B&B Italia has collaborated with some of the world's most renowned designers and architects, including , Mario Bellini, Jeffrey Bernett, David Chipperfield, Antonio Citterio, Naoto Fukasawa, Zaha Hadid, Chris Howker, Vico Magistretti, Jean-Marie Massaud, Gaetano Pesce, Paolo Piva, Richard Sapper, Afra and Tobia Scarpa, Richard Schultz, Ettore Sottsass, Studio Kairos, Patricia Urquiola, Jakob Wahner, and Marcel Wanders, among others. B&B Italia has won four Compasso d’Oro Awards. The first was for Studio Kairos’ Sisamo Wardrobein 1974, and later Bellini’s Le Bambole in 1979, and Citterio’s Sity...
