This is a beautiful antique, Victorian Cuban mahogany breakfront library bookcase, masterfully crafted in rich flame mahogany, circa 1860 in date. This impressive bookcase features multiple mahogany corbels, panelled doors on the lower cupboards with a central internal shelf inside each with three frieze drawers above them. The four glazed doors in the upper section each house four original adjustable shelves. It has it's original working locks and keys. The drawer linings and the bookcase back are also made from solid mahogany. There is no mistaking its superb quality and very grand design, which is certain to make it a talking point in your home and stand proud in whichever room you choose to display it. Condition: You are viewing this item in its incredibly excellent original untouched condition. Any minor restoration that is required will be accomplished before delivery and is included in t he price. Dimensions in cm: Height 224 x Width 213 x Depth 57 Dimensions in inches: Height 7 feet, 4 inches x Width 7 feet x Depth 1 foot, 10 inches Cuban Mahogany Swietenia mahagoni, the "Wood of Kings". Swietenia mahagoni is the wood that planked the ships of the Spanish Armada. Thomas Sheraton, Thomas Chippendale, and Duncan Phyfe chose Cuban Mahogany for their furniture. It has been among the most prized and valuable timbers since the late 16th century.. As its reputation grew, the supply of wood shrank. As timber harvest methods became more sophisticated, the inaccessible trees became lumber. By the mid 1700's it was becoming scarce. By the mid 1800's good lumber was becoming rare. By the late 1800's the species had been logged into genetic impoverishment and commercial extinction. Flame Mahogany Thomas Sheraton - 18th century furniture designer, once characterized mahogany as "best suited to furniture where strength is demanded as well as a wood that works up easily, has a beautiful figure and polishes so well that it is an ornament to any room in which it may be placed." Matching his words to his work, Sheraton designed much mahogany furniture. The qualities that impressed Sheraton are particularly evident in a distinctive pattern of wood called "flame mahogany." The flame figure in the wood is revealed by slicing through the face of the branch at the point where it joins another element of the tree. Our reference: 07002
