About the Item

This is an important antique Italian bureau bookcase, made in Venice and circa 1750 in date.  It has been made from the finest burr walnut with walnut crossbanding and satinwood line inlay. The top has two mirrored doors with a small cherub engraved mirror above them in the frieze. The doors open to reveal a gold satin lined interior with two shelves and two small drawers. The bureau fall can be lowered to reveal an interior with two small drawers and two  cupboards which provide ample space for storing pens, papers, etc.  It has its original  handles, working locks and keys. This is an absolutely unique piece!   Condition: In really excellent condition having been beautifully cleaned, polished and waxed in our workshops, please see photos for confirmation.   Dimensions in cm: Height 226 cm x Width 91 cm x Depth 50 cm Dimensions in inches: Height 7 foot, 5 inches x Width 3 feet x Depth 1 foot, 8 inches Burr Walnut refers to the swirling figure present in nearly all walnut when cut and polished, and especially in the wood taken from the base of the tree where it joins the roots. However the true burr is a rare growth on the tree where hundreds of tiny branches have started to grow. Burr walnut produces some of the most complex and beautiful figuring you can find. Walnut The Walnut woods are probably the most recognisable and popular of all the exotic woods, having been used in furniture making for many centuries. Walnut veneer was highly priced and the cost would reflect the ‘fanciness’ of the veneer – the more decorative, then the more expensive and desirable. Our reference: 01675
