The Connect Bookcase is emblematic of the contemporary interweaving of mass manufacturing and traditional joinery technique. Construction and fastening details remain as evidence of process and are integral to the final piece. Mechanical connections are used to join the precision engineered components that make up the cabinet. The result is refined but honest to the materials, and is meant to encapsulate the essence of the substrates while distilling them into a modern form. New Format Studio

New Format is a manufacturing and design firm based in Vancouver, Canada, founded in 2013 by principal Henry Norris. We use our background in architectural design and fabrication as the basis for explorations in furniture. Our motivation and interest is to take new ideas and apply them to the built environment around us. As part of our commitment to creating pieces of the highest quality, we produce and finish the majority of our work in house, at our 4000 square foot studio in Vancouver. By keeping our work close at hand, we are able to constantly experiment with the materials and refine our processes. We are inspired by problem solving and the ethos of hand craftsmanship.
