Early 19th Century French Empire Bookcase with Safe-Deposit-Box, Mahogany

About the Item

Empire bookcase with safe deposit box France Mahogany Empire around 1820 Dimensions: H x W x D: 227 x 154 x 49 cm Description: Impressive Empire centrepiece with neatly laid Cuban mahogany and fine gilded fittings. The substructure, standing on a plinth, consists of two tiers, one above the other, each with three doors. The impressive fittings are positioned in the centre of the doors. On the outer doors we see lyres framed by cornucopias, foliage and tendrils. The strings of the lyres are partially movable and conceal the keyholes behind them. On the central doors we see laurel branches with moving flowers. If we move the flowers a little to the left, the keyhole behind them is revealed. The interior is divided by shelves and could have been used to store papers and office utensils. A highlight of the piece of furniture is its metal-lined safe compartment with its triple-locking bar lock. The lock is stamped with the name of the manufacturer "FICHET A PARIS" as well as a crown and the number 13734. The glazed top of the cabinet has three doors and was probably intended for storing and displaying books. The fittings in the cornice correspond with those of the base. Furniture of comparable quality and appearance is known by Pierre-Benuit Marcion (1769-1840) and Bernard Molitor (1755-1833), among others. Molitor also used the same patents to hide the keyholes. However, no signature was found on this piece of furniture. Condition: Refurbished, suitable for everyday use and polished with shellac. You can find out more about the Empire period in the reference book: Marie-Noelle de Grandy - Le Mobilier Francais - Directoire Consulat Empire

  • Early 19th Century Biedermeier Empire Secretary, Germany, Prussia, C. 1815
    Located in Greven, DE
North Germany / Prussia Birch Biedermeier / Empire around 1815 Dimensions: H x W x D: 174 x 102 x 55 cm Description: Very exclusive secretary from the Prussian North German Biedermeier period around 1815. Piece of furniture standing on pointed legs with two drawers at the bottom, the writing flap above, another drawer above and a hidden head drawer at the very top. The piece of furniture is veneered in exciting grained birch wood. Due to the different color hangings within the wood and the interplay of hues associated with it, we also refer to it as "flamed" birch. The beautiful wood is complemented by blackened moldings and beautiful fire-gilded bronze hardware in beautiful quality. The interior of the writing compartment is veneered in apple tree. We see a stair-like rise to a central door flanked by pilasters. Drawers of different sizes and two large compartments with dividers for letters and papers complete the secretary part. Looking at the piece of furniture from above, we see an old shipping label. According to it, the secretary was loaded onto the train at the station "Odertor" in Wroclaw. The destination was probably Berin. Corresponding mmarkings we find on the back panel. Piece of furniture made in wonderful quality craftsmanship. A true testament to the high quality of Prussian furniture...

  • Early 19th Century French Mahogany Bookcase
    Located in Gloucestershire, GB
An Exceptional Quality Early 19th Century French Mahogany Bookcase with the Finest Possible Veneers and Wonderful Carving Throughout. This superb bookcase features the best quality mahogany veneers laid on to an oak carcase with solid mahogany doors, all expensive features that were only employed by the best workshops when money was no object. The shaped cornice and the panelled lower doors suggest a gothic inspiration but this is handled with real delicacy which was often not the case with later 19th century gothic revivalism which could be overbearing and overpowering to the eye. Designed for the display of fine books, porcelain or objects, the top section of the bookcase is largely plain, allowing the fine veneers to shine in conjunction with small carvings on the pilasters and a number of finely executed mouldings. The lower section is where the decorative scheme becomes more pronounced, small acanthus carvings on the pilasters framing the spectacular panelled doors which are executed in particularly high relief. Even here where the decoration is more prominent, the grain of the mahogany catches the eye first as it is so beautifully figured and of excellent colour. The pilasters on this lower section are carved so as to simulate partially octagonal columns of obvious gothic inspiration and there are pull out reading and writing slides concealed in the frieze between the upper and lower sections. The doors in the base section open to reveal simple cupboards...
