English Regency Mahogany Lyre Form Book Stand or Display, C. 1815 - 1830

About the Item

This is a fine Regency period double bookstand, crafted in England circa 1815–1830. Constructed in solid mahogany, the bookstand exemplifies the restrained elegance and refined craftsmanship characteristic of the English Regency era. The bookrest features a central partition and two angled platforms, designed to cradle books or manuscripts securely in an upright position. The scrolling arms are delicately shaped and fitted with a series of finely turned spindles, lending architectural structure and grace to the design. The spindled galleries reflect the period’s neoclassical fascination with linear form and rhythm. Raised on simple bun feet, the stand is compact yet visually commanding, with the warm glow of aged mahogany highlighting the rich figuring of the wood grain. This type of object would have graced the desk or writing table of a gentleman scholar or literate household, functioning both practically as a reading aid and decoratively as an expression of cultured taste. The understated beauty and intelligent design speak to the Regency period’s synthesis of utility and elegance, as well as the increasing prominence of book culture and education in early 19th-century Britain. Measures: 16.5" w x 12" d x 9.125" h.
