About the Item

A fine Walnut Bookcase by Morris & Co, designed by George Jack.Of breakfront form, with an upper divided section above an arrangement of open shelves in three sections. Stamped “Morris &Co, 395” England, circa 1890 126cms H x 183cms w x 38cms d Prov; Laurence W Hodson (1864-1933). Laurence Hodson was an art collector who had a passionate interest in the private presses of the Edwardian period. He was an important Patron of William Morris and other leading Arts and Crafts artists. He helped found and run The University of Birmingham between 1898 and 1906, he was the Chairman of the Fine Art Committee for The Wolverhampton Art and Industrial Exhibition in 1902, and financer to The Guild of Handicraft. Between 1895-96 Hodson asked Morris and Co to help re-furbish the family home Compton Hall. This included The three Holy Grail Tapestries- designed by Edward Burne-Jones and J.H.Dearle for the drawing room. (Now owned by Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery.) The St George Cabinet- designed by Philip Webb for the 1962 under Morris, Marshall, Faulkner &Co for the 1862 London International Exhibition may have been acquired by Hodson during the re-furbishment. (Now in the V & A). The commission wes so important that William Morris named a wallpaper design “Compton”. Lit. Morris and Co began in 1875 and then opened premises in Oxford St in 1877. William Morris founded Morris, Marshall, Faulkner & Co previously in 1861. He became more interested in furniture when he moved into The Red House which was designed by Phillip Webb. Phillip Webb designed most of the furniture for both companies. George Jack (1855-1931) was introduced to William Morris by Webb and from 1885 he designed furniture for Morris & Co. He also developed skills in woodcarving and other crafts , including mosaics and stained glass. He joined the Central School of Arts and Crafts on it’s foundation in 1896 teaching wood carving under the Principal- William Lethaby. From 1900 Jack taught at The Royal College of Art.
